The Old Windmill – Brisbane

by loganuniacke@gmail.com

The Old Windmill, located in Wickham Park, Brisbane, is Queensland’s oldest surviving building and a significant historical landmark. Constructed in 1828 by convict labour during the Moreton Bay penal settlement era, the windmill initially served the practical purpose of grinding grain to supplement the settlement’s food supply. Its original design included a treadmill mechanism operated by convicts, which was later replaced by wind-powered sails. The structure’s usage evolved over the years, reflecting the changing needs and technological advancements of the time (Queensland Government, 2024).

The Old Windmill

In the mid-19th century, the Old Windmill’s role transitioned from a practical facility to a communications hub. By 1861, it housed Queensland’s first telegraph office, linking Brisbane with the rest of the colony and facilitating more efficient communication. This change marked the windmill’s adaptation to new technological demands, further embedding its importance in the region’s history. Throughout its existence, the building has undergone various modifications and restorations to preserve its structural integrity and historical significance (State Library of Queensland, 2024).

Today, the Old Windmill stands as a heritage-listed monument and a testament to Brisbane’s colonial past. It is not only an architectural relic but also a symbol of the city’s development from a penal settlement to a modern urban centre. Visitors to Wickham Park can explore the exterior of this historic structure, which continues to be a point of interest for historians and tourists alike. Its preservation allows for ongoing education and appreciation of Brisbane’s rich history (Brisbane City Council, 2024).
